Resident's web site puts Glen Ellyn on-line
By Bob Goldsborough With many DuPage County towns considering the creation of a World Wide Web site that will provide information about municipal services, Glen Ellyn finds itself with a service it didn't even solicit, according to village staff. Glen Ellyn native Ted Eselgroth has created a web site, accessible to anyone with a computer and modem, that ties together information from the Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce, local high schools and colleges, village churches, the Glen Ellyn Public Library and the Park District. In the process, Eselgroth has placed a slew of municipal information on line, including text directly from the village's calendar. Eselgroth's site has virtually eliminated the need for the village to build its own web site, some local officials say. Internet surfers can access Eselgroth's web site, which has links to Glenbard School District 87's home page, at www.glen-ellyn.com. While Village Trustees have not formally discussed Eselgroth's actions, village staff members have reacted favorably to the resident's web site. The programmer has pledged to keep the site bias-free, and he continues to solicit suggestions from village staff on how to improve the information provided. "What we've seen has been very acceptable to us," says Dave Cox, assistant to the village administrator. A 1962 graduate of Glenbard West High School, Eselgroth previously designed a similar web site for Cherokee County, Georgia. He said he hopes the Glen Ellyn site ultimately can attract advertisers, but considers it a showcase for his computer design talents.
