Last week, people visited Glen Ellyn from Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Germany, Spain, Finland, France, Greece, Croatia, Iceland, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Romania, Sweden, Trinidad, Tobago, the United Kingdom, and South Africa. They also came from Park Boulevard, Main Street, and other Village neighborhoods. They came not by road or rail, but by computer and telephone line. In short, last week thousands of "surfers" visited www.glen-ellyn.com... the Internet web site that details Glen Ellyn government... schools... parks... businesses... churches... non-profit organizations... events... news... weather... traffic reports... maps... photos... and yes -- "much, much more!" The Glen Ellyn Web Site, now celebrating its first anniversary, continues to grow in both content and importance. Experienced web surfers know that the site includes an extraordinary amount of information about, by and for the Village and its people. When printed out, the Glen Ellyn "home page" -- i.e., the site's table of contents -- is five 8-1/2" x 11" pages long. If every page of content indexed by the site were to be printed out, it would result in a stack of paper many feet thick. During the site's first year, Glen Ellyn native and web site designer Ted Eselgroth built many pro bono pages for Glen Ellyn non-profit organizations and institutions. Ironically, much of Eselgroth's commercial web work is for out-of-town clients. He recently completed commercial and industrial web sites for a national mail-order firm, a Florida-based distributor of medical packaging, and an Atlanta advertising agency, among others. "The Glen Ellyn Site is the most fun," notes Eselgroth. "It's my laboratory." The same week NASA was being praised for its state-of-the-art interactive 360° panorama of Mars, Eselgroth posted one of Lake Ellyn. Considering how much the value of the Web in general and the Glen Ellyn site in particular have grown in the past year, it's hard to imagine what it will look like next year at this time. "Two years ago photos were a big deal," observes Eselgroth. "Now you can have three-dimensional images that a "surfer" can manipulate in space... real-time video... CD-quality audio... next year's Forth of July Parade and Great Cardboard Boat Regatta could well be broadcast live on the Internet!" Which would be quite a treat for those web-surfers from around the world. In addition to maintaining the Glen Ellyn Web Site, Eselgroth -- whose video and audiovisual clients have also included Control Data, Kraft Foods, Public Television, RCA, Reebok and others -- serves on two Village Boards, is an adjunct instructor at the College of DuPage, and is an active member of the Chamber of Commerce and several other civic organizations.
