    TECHNICAL REPORT

    all PEL-BOND

    PBR 398
PEL-BOND PROVES TO BE SUPERIOR TO LIGNIN SULPHONATE AS A PELLET BINDER

    PROCEDURE

    • A trial was conducted at a commercial feed mill to evaluate the efficacy of Pel-Bond compared to lignin sulphonate and to the use of no pellet binder. A swine finisher feed containing 14% protein and 10% fiber was used in the trial. Lignin sulphonate was added at the rate of 12.5 kgs per ton while the Pel-Bond was added at the rate of 1.0 kg per ton.
    RESULTS

    • Lignin
                          Control Sulphonate PEL-BOND
                         -------- ---------- --------
      Mash Temp. (°C) 71 71 71
      Pellet Temp. (°C) 79 82 74
      Die Friction (°C) 8 11 3
      Pellet Hardness (psi) 9.11 9.86 12.0

From the results it can be seen that Pel-Bond proved to be a much superior pellet binder when compared with lignin sulphonate. With the addition of Pel-Bond at one (1) kg per ton the temperature increase due to the pelleting process was markedly less than the increase for the feed with no pellet binder as well as the feed with lignin sulphonate added at the rate of 12.5 kgs per ton. This reduction in die friction would result in a lowering of the energy cost expended during the pelleting process. Pel-Bond also produced a harder pellet with the pellet hardness being 24% greater than for the control pellets and almost 18% greater than for the pellets made with the addition of lignin sulphonate. These improvements from the use of Pel-Bond were obtained with a much lower addition rate as compared with the lignin sulphonate.
