    Report No: AVB 399

    PROCEDURE

    • Avi·Bac WS is a high quality microbial product containing a combination of beneficial Lactobacilli and Bifido bacteria and digestive enzymes designed for use in poultry. A trial was conducted utilizing 1200 male broiler chicks to evaluate the benefits of AVI-BAC WS for improving performance of broilers.

The 1200 chicks were assigned to 24 pens of 50 chicks each providing 12 replications per treatment. All of the birds were fed the same commercial broiler feeding program. The starter feed was fed for the first 21 days and contained 22% protein with salinomycin as the coccidiostat and bacitracin as a growth promoter. The grower feed contained 20% protein, salinomycin and bacitracin and was fed during days 22 - 41 while the withdrawal feed containing 18% protein and bacitracin was fed during days 42 - 45.

Twelve (12) pens of birds served as the control while the remaining twelve (12) pens served as the treatment group and were administered AVI-BAC WS via the water at the rate of 25 grams per 100 liters throughout the duration of the trial.

The administration of Avi·Bac WS to the chickens via the water improved performance of the birds. The birds given the Avi·Bac WS showed a significant improvement in weight gain of 2.66%. This increase in body weight was obtained with a significantly improved feed efficiency when adjusted for body weight. These results show that the administration of Avi·Bac WS which assists in maintaining a healthy intestinal microflora to help maximize feed digestion and utilization and prevent digestive upsets can be a valuable tool for improving the performance of broiler chickens.
