NEWS RELEASE August 23, 1996
CONTACT: Ted Eselgroth FOR RELEASE: Tuesday, September 3, 1996 GLEN ELLYN IS ON THE WEB! Information from, for and about Glen Ellyn is now available to residents of the Village (and the rest of the world) via "The Web" -- the text, pictures and sound part of the Internet. "What we've put online today is just the beginning," says Glen Ellyn resident and web site designer Ted Eselgroth. "The Web is, by definition, always under construction. Although we've opened our electronic doors with a large amount of Glen Ellyn information, we'll be adding more -- lots more -- every day." The list of information already posted in Glen Ellyn's "cyberspace" begins with government-related information ranging from Village departments through the names and addresses of the state and national elected officials who represent Glen Ellyn (with direct connections to their email addresses and web sites, if they have them). There are maps of the area showing parks, schools and other landmarks, along with a regional map showing Glen Ellyn's proximity to Chicago and nearby suburbs -- "for newcomers," Eselgroth suggests. Another section marks the beginning of what is to become a large photo gallery of Glen Ellyn scenes, past and present. Still different areas offer information about the Public Library, the Historical Society (including Stacy's Tavern), and other civic organizations, social clubs and arts groups. "Over time, we want to post pages for virtually every non-profit and governmental organization that has useful information to offer -- whether they need to reach students... parents... seniors... people thinking of moving to the area... or former GlenEllynites and college students who just want to come back every so often for a 'virtual visit,'" says Eselgroth. The site can be visited by computer users with access to the Internet at www.glen-ellyn.com. The site's "Home Page" is a categorized index that includes not only links to pages that were created expressly for Glen Ellyn, but also to other locations on the Internet that offer additional facts and information of use to Village residents. "For commuters, we've included the Illinois Department of Transportation's Expressway Congestion Map and Metra's local rail schedule," notes Eselgroth. "A Glen Ellyn-specific weather forecast is here, as are U.S. Census Bureau facts and figures about the Village... along with the DuPage County government site... the College of DuPage... the Daily Herald classifieds... the Chicago Trib's Dupage News page... and much more." "Our sub-pages offer links to additional sites. The page describing the Glen Ellyn Historical Society, for example, includes a point-and-click "hot link" to its Chicago counterpart. "In short, we're working to build the definitive community information site on the World Wide Web. If local information is already online, we'll make it easy for our fellow GlenEllynites to find it. If it's not yet available, we'll gather it from traditional sources and post it. "The goal is to make the Glen Ellyn Web Site useful to anyone who visits. We're looking forward to the day when a family can log on to review a local restaurant menu as easily as a transferee from Boston can compare mortgage rates... or a business manager in the Far East can check out a Glen Ellyn office site," says Eselgroth. No tax dollars were used to create the site; the goal is to build an important and respected service that will also house the commercial web pages of local business and industry. Eselgroth recently returned to his hometown of Glen Ellyn from suburban Atlanta, where he built The Cherokee County Web Site -- the prototype of the service now offered here. "The Georgia site is a great success," says Eselgroth, "It's quickly grown to at least 6,000 'hits' -- electronic visits -- each week, in an area with far fewer computers per household than here in Glen Ellyn. "It continues to serve that area's residents, schools, government, civic organizations and sponsors well. I know this new Glen Ellyn web site will do the same for the Village and its people." The Internet in general and The World Wide Web in particular contain an almost unimaginable -- and thus almost unmanageable -- amount of information; the trick is being able to find useful information quickly and efficiently. For web-surfin' GlenEllynites, the Glen Ellyn Web Site will help make that dream a reality.
